Inner City Blues turned a three-runner July Stakes into a sharp statement at Newmarket, stretching clear in the final half-furlong to remain unbeaten and underline why Godolphin views him as one of Charlie Appleby’s most important 2-year-olds. The Blue Point colt, already a winner on his debut at York on June 13, added the G2 Kingdom of Bahrain July Stakes on July 9 and did it with authority after showing enough speed and composure to sit behind the more experienced Adaay Of Scarlett and Hickory Lad before finishing strongest.
The official result showed just how decisive the performance was. Ridden by William Buick, Inner City Blues was sent off the 5/6 favourite, covered the 6f on good to firm ground in 1m 11.35s and beat Adaay Of Scarlett by 1 1/4 lengths, with Hickory Lad another 1 1/2 lengths away in third. Persian Spring was the only non-runner. The small field reduced the numbers but not the significance: this was a race that asked whether a fast-improving juvenile could turn promise into pattern-race substance, and Inner City Blues answered in the affirmative.
Appleby’s colt still has a profile that suggests there is more to come. Godolphin lists him as a March 6, 2024 foal out of Dancin Inthestreet, and the stable’s own assessment is that he is unbeaten in two starts and now looks like a high-class prospect. Appleby has described him as physically strong but still mentally immature, while Buick said the colt showed inexperience yet has plenty of improvement left as he gains strength and experience. Buick also indicated that seven furlongs looks realistic in time, with the possibility that the colt could sharpen further as he matures.
The market has already backed up that view. Inner City Blues was a €180,000 Goffs November foal, then a 375,000gns Tattersalls Book 1 yearling, before becoming the €900,000 top-priced colt at the Arqana May Breeze-Up. Thoroughbred Daily News noted that he is the second foal and a half-brother to Ironwill, while his dam, Dancin Inthestreet, is a half-sister to Dr Zempf and Phoenix Passion. For Appleby, it was a first July Stakes win, and for Godolphin it offered a colt who now points toward deeper late-summer juvenile tests and, if he keeps progressing, a route well beyond them.
