Irish Maxima wins Dashing Beauty Stakes at Delaware Park

Irish Maxima turned the $145,500 Dashing Beauty Stakes into a clean black-type addition at Delaware Park, winning the six-furlong filly-and-mare sprint by a length with Frankie Pennington aboard. The 5-year-old daughter of Maximus Mischief paid $2.60 as the favorite, while My Magic Wand, with Edwin Gonzalez, held second by a neck.

That is the kind of result that changes how a mare is managed. A stakes win does more than pad the bankroll. It gives Irish Maxima another black-type line, the currency that matters when connections are deciding whether to stay in allowance company, take on richer sprint stakes, or test graded company again. She already owned a serious résumé, and this latest victory only sharpened it.

The Delaware score also fit the form she brought into the race. Irish Maxima had not raced since taking the one-mile Grade II Ruffian by a length at Belmont at Aqueduct on May 9, and she returned to Delaware Park looking every bit like a filly who had carried that quality forward. The pre-race picture had pointed in the same direction, with the July 20 preview calling her the one to beat in a race that had drawn a field of eight before the final field settled at four.

That smaller field did not make the win less meaningful. If anything, it put a premium on what Irish Maxima does best in a fast summer sprint: break cleanly, hold position, and finish with purpose over a six-furlong trip that can expose any softness in form. She did exactly that, and My Magic Wand’s narrow margin back to second showed the race still required a sharp effort from the winner.

The long view matters here too. Before the Dashing Beauty, Irish Maxima had already been credited with five stakes titles and more than $756,000 in career earnings, a base that made her a relevant name in the older filly and mare division. Another stakes win like this helps the page as much as the campaign, strengthening her appeal for tougher spots now and more valuable broodmare value later.
