Talleyrand debuts at Ellis Park with star-studded pedigree behind him

Talleyrand needed every inch of Ellis Park’s 5 1/2 furlongs on dirt, and the Godolphin colt got there first by a head in a $95,000 maiden special weight for 2-year-olds. Ben Curtis rode the Brendan P. Walsh trainee to victory in the sixth race on July 9, 2026, with a 3:12 p.m. post and a final time of 1:05.44 on a fast track.

The colt’s debut drew attention before he ever reached the gate. Talleyrand, a Kentucky-bred foal of April 11, 2024, was by Into Mischief out of Pretty City Dancer, the GI Spinaway winner, and he brought a $560,000 price tag from OBS March. Equibase listed Godolphin, LLC as owner and Godolphin as breeder, with Curtis named as the rider and Brendan P. Walsh as the trainer.

That pedigree has already produced major juvenile speed for Walsh. Pretty Mischievous, a full sister to Talleyrand, won her debut for the barn before going on to become a three-time Grade I winner with the Kentucky Oaks, Acorn Stakes and Test Stakes, while earning $2,112,560. Bella Ballerina, another daughter of Pretty City Dancer, later added victories in the Rachel Alexandra Stakes and Fair Grounds Oaks after being introduced as part of the same high-end family.

Walsh’s record with the mare’s offspring made Talleyrand’s first start more than a routine maiden. Pretty Mischievous and Bella Ballerina both flashed immediately for the stable, and Talleyrand followed that pattern by handling his opening assignment at a distance that should suit a sharp 2-year-old. The colt’s win pushed his lifetime record to 1-1-0-0 and his earnings to $59,512.

The result also sharpened the commercial appeal that surrounded him all along. A first-out win from a colt by Into Mischief out of a Grade I-producing mare keeps Talleyrand in the conversation for the summer juvenile program, and Ellis Park’s sixth race supplied the kind of start that can move a young horse from expensive prospect to legitimate stakes horse in a single afternoon.
