Trawlerman gets weight swing for Goodwood Cup rematch with Scandinavia

Trawlerman will return to Goodwood Racecourse for a second crack at Scandinavia in the Group 1 Goodwood Cup, with the weights expected to hand the John and Thady Gosden stayer a 1lb turnaround from Royal Ascot. Thady Gosden said the shift "may well have made the difference" after Trawlerman was denied by a head in the Gold Cup, a finish that left the older horse still within touching distance of Aidan O'Brien's younger rival.

The Ascot evidence gives the rematch its edge. Trawlerman, ridden there by William Buick, had already shown his form when he lowered the course record in an earlier Royal Ascot win before being caught in the final strides in the Gold Cup. He had gone into that race as the 2024 runner-up, and the narrow defeat confirmed that the gap between the two stayers remains small over the staying trip.

That is why the Goodwood Cup matters as more than a repeat meeting. Trawlerman is the proven older horse, tough enough to keep finding after a demanding Ascot campaign, while Scandinavia represents the younger force from the O'Brien stable. Over two and a half miles, the difference between giving away 1lb and receiving it back can be enough to decide whether a rematch stays a sentimental veteran story or turns into a genuine form reversal.

The Goodwood Cup sits inside the Qatar Goodwood Festival, one of the midsummer targets for stayers, and the 2026 festival runs from Tuesday 28 July to Saturday 1 August. Trawlerman's place in the line-up has already been set, setting up a straight test of Ascot form against the fine margins that often define Group 1 staying races.
